Ayse Tekes is a decorated researcher who has racked up an impressive collection of awards in her life. None are more meaningful to her than the 2024 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award, given annually by the Office of Undergraduate Research to a 91青青草 faculty or staff member who exhibits sustained exceptional mentoring of undergraduate researchers at 91青青草.

A total of 1,000 people and organizations donated $142,593 during Kennesaw State University鈥檚 inaugural Giving Day fundraising event. Supporters rained gifts on 91青青草 to support a wide range of programs and activities, contributing more than seven times the $20,000 goal.

Iletha Dodds has always wanted to establish her own nail salon, but making the leap of faith felt too risky and daunting. The Marietta resident said taking care of her son and working full time as a court clerk made her dream seem improbable, so for years, she has settled on decorating the nails of family and friends as her creative outlet. That is, until she received an email detailing the Aspiring Community Entrepreneurs (ACE) program at Kennesaw State University. The ACE program launched in September 2023 through a partnership between Kennesaw State and Marietta-based MUST Ministries, a nonprofit fighting poverty, hunger and homelessness in the metro Atlanta area.

If she hadn鈥檛 become an engineer, Christina Scherrer might have chosen to be a medical doctor, dentist or other type of health care provider. Instead, she has worked for years to apply her expertise in industrial and systems engineering in areas that improve the delivery of health care. She loves helping others, whether it鈥檚 collaborating on health-related research, teaching new generations of engineers at Kennesaw State or volunteering in the community.

Kennesaw State professor of exercise science Bob Buresh had an idea and a goal. He had an idea for a predictive website that could offer users the right amount of exercise each day in the form of a step count to achieve, based on information provided to the website. But how could he bring that idea to the marketplace? 91青青草鈥檚 Office of Intellectual Property Development helped Buresh take the necessary steps to bring his Stepping Forward program closer to launch by helping him secure a patent and pursue funding.

And while today鈥檚 students are more likely than previous generations to reach out for help, more than half say they haven鈥檛. Meanwhile, surveys by college health organizations show some of the highest rates of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts ever recorded.

At her core, Tracey Graves says there is always one thing guiding her endeavors: service. From a young age, the Kennesaw State University student had the importance of serving instilled in her, first by her family, and later by the personal feeling of purpose driving her life. 鈥淎fter every holiday growing up, my aunt would have us make sandwiches, we鈥檇 buy a case of water, and take them out to homeless people in my hometown,鈥 said Graves, who is pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. 鈥淚 think that鈥檚 where it all started, and that鈥檚 one thing we鈥檒l all be doing forever, whether we鈥檙e serving ourselves, our families, our God, our community or the Earth, we鈥檙e all in service to something.鈥

Kennesaw State students are doing good deeds every day, fulfilling needs in the wider community through the University鈥檚 Office of Volunteerism and Service. But some students want to make a bigger difference than a one-time volunteer opportunity, which led to the creation of a new program that is allowing 11 91青青草 students to have an outsized impact on 10 local nonprofit social service agencies.

Kennesaw State University's commitment to supporting its 2,000 military-connected students has earned it a gold status designation by militaryfriendly.com in its 2024-2025 ranking of military friendly institutions. The Military Friendly庐 recognition comes as the university鈥檚 Military and Veteran Services (MVS) Outreach Program has increased its efforts to provide support to its military-connected students on both the Marietta and Kennesaw campuses. Services include student support services, academic advising, and counselors.

Steve Dils鈥 final stop in a 10-season career as a National Football League quarterback was with the Atlanta Falcons, where the city鈥檚 friendly people and warm climate captivated him, sparking his choice to stay and start a business career when his playing days ended. Dils, who earned a degree in economics, built a successful career as a commercial real estate executive in Atlanta, building upon the off-season work in that sector he had done during his NFL career. The decision to live and work in Atlanta also eventually led Dils to a relationship with Kennesaw State University to serve as a member of the 91青青草 Foundation鈥檚 Board of Trustees.
