An undercurrent of restlessness and curiosity fuels Jess Maillet. The non-traditional, first-generation Kennesaw State University student has embraced change at every turn, from leaving her longtime restaurant job to enroll in college, to juggling several research projects across multiple disciplines as a mother of four. Along the way, Maillet has presented at the Symposium of Student Scholars, engaged in research as part of the First-Year Scholars program, and secured a spot in the President’s Parliament Scholars Ambassadors (PPSA) program.

Apart from managing a full class schedule and extracurricular activities, Lena Song is a changemaker. A double major in media and entertainment studies and graphic communications and a minor in Asian Studies, Song serves as the vice president of a registered student organization, is actively involved with the Korean Program, and recently completed the inaugural Metro Atlanta Changemakers Fellowship.

Supported by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, Kennesaw State University assistant professor Ashish Aphale and a team of students are sparking innovation in the field of clean energy through their work on novel materials for energy storage and conversion systems. This research aims to study the influence of hydrogen on the growth of metal oxide nanostructures, with the goal of enhancing electrode performance in energy storage devices.

Walking through the exhibits at the Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, Georgia, it’s not uncommon for Christen Knickerbocker ’24 to see something that catches her eye. Sometimes she pauses to admire the museum’s iconic dinosaur skeleton, while other days she notes one of the precious gemstones in its expansive collection. Though the recent Kennesaw State University master’s graduate works as collection manager at Tellus – cataloguing acquisitions and staying behind the scenes – she does occasionally walk the floor to admire the Curatorial Department’s work.
